ICON OF THE WEEK: Charli XCX

Created & Written by Lila Dekhi

Charlotte Emma Aitchison AKA Charli XCX is one of the world’s biggest pop stars. If her name doesn’t ring a bell, you must've heard or seen her latest album “BRAT.” That slime-green cover with the pixelated font. Minimalistic yet fascinating with of course, iconic hit songs to dance and vibe to. Charli XCX was born on August 2nd 1992 in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The “Von Dutch” singer started her music career at 14 years old by posting music onto MySpace. XCX would get invited to perform at warehouse raves and started to gain a following from there. Two years later, Charli got signed to her first record label, Asylum Records, where she launched several singles and mixtapes. Her debut album “True Romance” was released in April 2013. She truly rose to fame when she co-wrote and sang in Icona Pop’s “I Love It” and Iggy Azalea's “Fancy.” Both songs made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the list for many weeks. Her second studio album, featuring hits like “Boom Clap," was launched in 2014, jet setting off to success by becoming her first album to appear on the charts. Her work switched paths by venturing into new and different sounds, in mixtapes “Vroom Vroom EP” (2015) and albums “Charli” (2019), “How I’m Feeling Now” (2020), “Crash” (2022) and of course, “BRAT” (2024).

Charli starred on the cover of Vogue Singapore for this year's April issue and spoke about her upcoming album [BRAT] at the time saying, “Lyrically, this is quite a different record for me. I’ve written the songs almost in the way I would write texts to my friends or based on things I would say to them on FaceTime. We talk a lot about pop culture and music and it’s been really fun to gossip about the songs we go. They’ll ask ‘Oh, who is this one about? Is this about a friend? Is it about an ex?’ It has fuelled this fun, gossipy narrative which permeates the album.” When the topic of her choice in green for the cover came up, XCX said, “I wanted to go with an offensive, off-trend shade of green to trigger the idea of something being wrong. I’d like for us to question our expectations of pop culture—why are some things considered good and acceptable, and some things deemed bad? I’m interested in the narratives behind that and I want to provoke people. I’m not doing things to be nice.” While adding this impressive album to her resume, Charli has already carved herself a prominent and fierce place in the music industry and continues to with her talent, creativity, and incredible work. She’s an ICON… Duh.

Thank you for reading BRATS!!
